The Golden Goose / El Ganso de Oro
There was once a boy named Simpleton.
Había una vez un chico llamado Simpletón.
Everyone called him Simpleton because he was gentle and a little silly.
Todos lo llamaban Simpletón porque era amable y un poco distraído.
But he had a good heart.
Pero tenía un buen corazón.
He lived with his mother and two older brothers.
Vivía con su madre y sus dos hermanos mayores.
His brothers were proud and rude.
Sus hermanos eran orgullosos y groseros.
One day, their mother said, “Go into the forest and cut some wood.”
Un día, su madre dijo: “Vayan al bosque y corten algo de leña.”
The oldest brother went first.

An old man appeared on the path.
Un anciano apareció en el camino.
“Please share your food with me,” he said.
“Por favor comparte tu comida conmigo,” dijo.
“No! Get your own food!” the brother snapped.
“¡No! ¡Consigue tu propia comida!” gruñó el hermano.
He walked away.
Se alejó.
But the moment he swung his axe, it slipped and cut his own leg.

He ran home crying.

The second brother tried next.

He also met the old man.

Finally Simpleton said, “Mother, let me try.”

His mother sighed but agreed.

Simpleton walked into the forest happily, humming a tune.

He met the same old man.

“Please share your food with me,” the man asked kindly.

“Of course,” Simpleton said.

He gave the man his whole lunch.

The old man smiled.

“You have a kind heart,” he told Simpleton.

“I will reward you. Cut that tree over there.”

Simpleton cut the tree.

Inside, he found a goose made of shining gold.

Its feathers glowed like sunlight.

Simpleton picked it up carefully.
Simpletón lo recogió con cuidado.
“I will take it home,” he said.
“Lo llevaré a casa,” dijo.
He walked to a nearby inn to rest.
Caminó hasta una posada cercana para descansar.
The innkeeper had three daughters.
El posadero tenía tres hijas.
They were curious, greedy girls.
Eran chicas curiosas y codiciosas.
They whispered, “That goose must be worth a fortune!”
Susurraron: “¡Ese ganso debe valer una fortuna!”
The first daughter touched the goose to pluck a golden feather.

But her hand stuck to it.

“Help!” she squeaked.

The second daughter tried to pull her free.

She stuck too.

The third daughter tried to rescue both.

Now all three girls were glued to the golden goose.

Simpleton didn’t even notice.

He picked up the goose and walked out the door.

The girls had to follow behind him in a long, silly line.

People in the village laughed as they passed.

Next, a farmer saw them and shouted, “Stop pulling those girls!”

He grabbed the last girl’s arm.

A baker ran out of his shop to help.

Soon they looked like a crazy parade marching behind a boy and a glowing goose.

He reached a city where the king lived.

Simpleton walked past the palace gates with his sticky parade.

The princess looked out the window.

Her eyes widened.

She burst into giggles.

Then laughter.

“No one has ever made her laugh like that!” shouted the king.

The king asked Simpleton about the goose.

Simpleton told him the whole story.

The king nodded and said, “A kind heart deserves a great reward.”
El rey asintió y dijo: “Un corazón amable merece una gran recompensa.”
He freed everyone stuck to the goose.

And he offered his daughter’s hand in marriage to Simpleton.

Simpleton and the princess grew to love each other.

Their wedding was full of music and flowers.

The golden goose sat proudly on a pillow beside them.
